The window you care about is the hold. While the faces are showing, the board is essentially paused above the clear, and any swap you make there counts toward the next link. Miss the hold and your swap becomes a fresh, separate action.

1. Pre-load the top before you trigger
Before you clear the bottom match, get the panels that will form the second link almost in position — one swap away. You want to spend the hold window making a single decisive move, not scrambling three panels across the board.
2. Trigger, then watch the flash
Clear your first match. The flash is your metronome click. Do not look at your cursor — look at the flashing panels. That is what tells you the window just opened.
3. Make your setup swap during the hold
While the faces are showing, execute the one pre-loaded swap so the falling panels will drop into a match. Because swapping is nearly instant and the hold gives you real time, you have more room than it feels like at speed. The instinct is to rush; the skill is to swap calmly inside the hold.
4. Let the fall resolve — hands off
Once the panels start dropping, stop touching that area. New players often “help” by swapping again mid-fall and accidentally break the match they just built. Trust the drop.
5. Chain the stop time forward
Every clear and chain link grants a bit of stop time that pauses the rising stack. Longer chains grant more. Use that pause to pre-load the next link instead of catching your breath — that is how a 2x quietly becomes a 4x.

Trying to force an “active” chain when a passive one was already resolving
